Georgetown, Delaware: The Heart of Sussex County (And Why It Means So Much to Me)
When people think about Sussex County, they usually think about the beaches. Rehoboth. Lewes. Bethany.
And don’t get me wrong… they’re beautiful. But if you ask me where the heart of Sussex County really is? It’s Georgetown.
More Than Just a Location
Georgetown isn’t flashy. It’s not trying to be. And honestly, that’s part of what makes it so special.
It’s central. It’s grounded. It’s where everything connects.
But for me, it’s more than just a dot on the map. It’s home.
Where Life Actually Happens
This is where my kids have grown up. Where everyday life happens. Where routines are built, memories are made, and life feels… real.
It’s not just about big events or weekend plans.
It’s about:
• School drop-offs
• Running into familiar faces at the store
• Seeing the same people at local events year after year
• Feeling like you’re part of something
Georgetown has that small-town feel that people are searching for… even if they don’t know how to put it into words.
Local Events That Bring Everyone Together
One of my favorite things about Georgetown is how the community actually shows up. Events here aren’t just something you hear about — they’re something you’re part of.
The Return Day is one of the most unique traditions in the country. It only happens every two years, but when it does, the entire town comes together for parades, food, and celebration.
Then there’s the Georgetown Christmas Parade, where families line the streets and it feels like something straight out of a small-town movie.
And in the summer, the Wings & Wheels Georgetown event brings in classic cars, planes, and a full day of family-friendly fun.
These aren’t just events. They’re traditions.
The Small Businesses That Make It Feel Like Home
Georgetown is full of those local spots that just become part of your routine.
Places like El Mercado, where you can find authentic ingredients, fresh food, and that sense of culture and community that so many families here connect with.
Or stopping by Vanderwende’s Ice Cream — especially in the warmer months. It’s one of those places that turns into a tradition without you even realizing it.
And when it comes to grabbing a bite to eat, you’ve got local staples like Georgetown Family Diner — classic, reliable, and always a familiar face — or El Charro, which is a go-to for so many people in the area for delicious authentic tacos and more!
These are the places my family actually goes to! It’s those small, local businesses that give Georgetown its personality.
The Center of It All
One of the things I love most about Georgetown is its location.
You’re:
• About 30 minutes from Rehoboth Beach
• Close to Lewes
• Near everything Sussex County has to offer
But you’re not in the middle of the traffic, the crowds, or the constant movement.
You get the convenience… without the chaos.
A Place That’s Growing (Without Losing Its Feel)
Georgetown has grown over the years. There are more homes, more people discovering the area, and more opportunity than ever before.
But it still holds onto that sense of community. It still feels like a place where people know each other. And that’s rare.
Why People Are Choosing Georgetown
I’ve seen more and more buyers choose Georgetown — not just because of price points or location, but because of the lifestyle.
They want:
• Space
• Community
• Accessibility
• A place that feels like home, not just a destination
And Georgetown offers that balance in a way that’s hard to find.
Why It Means So Much to Me
This isn’t just where I work. It’s where I’ve lived life. It’s where I’ve raised my kids. It’s where I’ve built relationships and watched others do the same.
So when I help someone find a home here… It’s a little different.
Because I’m not just showing them houses. I’m showing them a place I truly believe in.
The Bottom Line
Georgetown might not always be the first place people think of when they look at Sussex County.
But for a lot of us… It’s the place that keeps everything connected. It’s the heart.
Thinking About Making Georgetown Home?
If you’ve been exploring Sussex County and want a place that offers both convenience and community, Georgetown is absolutely worth a closer look.
And if you want someone to show you around who truly knows and loves the area, I’m always happy to help.
