For most of our lives, New Jersey was home.

We were born and raised there, built our lives there, and truly loved our home state. But like many people approaching retirement, we eventually had to face a reality that was hard to ignore: the cost of living.

When our children were grown, we finally reached the point where we could ask ourselves an important question—why are we still paying this much to live here?

Property taxes in our New Jersey home had climbed to nearly $1,000 a month. For many families, that’s essentially another mortgage payment. We knew that if we wanted to enjoy retirement, travel more, and truly have financial freedom, something had to change.

Discovering Southern Delaware

As we began exploring options, Southern Delaware quickly stood out.

The differences were eye-opening:

  • Home prices were significantly lower

  • Property taxes were about a tenth of what we were paying in New Jersey

  • The lifestyle felt slower, friendlier, and more relaxed

  • And importantly, we weren’t moving across the country

One of the biggest surprises? We could still easily get back home.

A drive of less than three hours to central New Jersey means we can still make quick trips for holidays, family events, and special occasions. It gave us the perfect balance… Close enough to stay connected, but far enough to enjoy a completely different pace of life.

What the Move Made Possible

Lower expenses didn’t just mean saving money. It meant gaining freedom.

Since moving to Delaware, we’ve been able to do something we always dreamed about but weren’t sure would ever happen: travel the world.

So far, we’ve taken incredible trips to Alaska, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. And this year, we’re heading to Eastern Europe!

Those experiences simply wouldn’t have been possible if we were still paying the same level of taxes we had in New Jersey.

A Different Kind of Retirement

For us, relocating wasn’t just about finances. It was about changing how we live.

Southern Delaware offered:

  • Coastal lifestyle

  • Lower cost of living

  • Friendly communities

  • Easy access back to family in the Northeast

It turned out to be the perfect fit.
